Question Q about TPMS w/ winter wheels

Hello VoltFolks,

I am new here -- just bought a lovely 2012 Volt yesterday and have a LOT to learn! These are interesting and complicated vehicles! I will start with something simple -- set up for winter tires & wheels:

Q#1: I have a good set of snow tires that are a bit larger than stock: i.e., 225/45 17. Am I right that these will work; the standard size is 215/55 17.

Q#2: I am shopping for winter wheels and am pondering the TPMS sensor kits. Does anyone have experience with those offered by TireRack? [315 MHz] Are they a hassle to program / connect to the Volt's brain? Are they really necessary? I know how to check tire pressure on my own!

Many thanks for advice and opinions.
Fred Owens
